The insider’s guide to water based coatings
When it comes to printed material for your business, choosing the right paper stock, coating and print format is as important as choosing the company that is going to provide the print services.
However, if you have chosen the right printing company, then they will also be able to advise you on the best way to get your material printed, from what type of paper is best for your requirement right down to the coating. At Streamline Press, we use the very latest printing technology that delivers full image and colour control, with consistent print results from the first copy to the last.
Water based coatings, otherwise known as aqueous coatings are available in a wide variety of options to suit all materials.
The coating is applied using a special in-line unit at the end of the press. It’s used to not only enhance your print but also to protect it.
A thin, fast drying layer of coating is applied and after traveling through the heated air drying unit, the sheet arrives in the delivery virtually dry. This drastically reduces the amount of spray powder that is needed, reduces any marking and allows the sheet to be moved on to the next process very quickly.
The coating is rub and scuff resistant, which gives far superior protection compared to traditional oil based sealers or varnishes.
With drying times eliminated, this reduces the overall production time. This is very useful when there is very little time in the schedule and quick turnaround times are needed.
There are a variety of different types of coating available suitable to all paper types that can enhance your print, not only protect it.
As the coating is applied at the same time as printing, there is no secondary process like there is in other finishes such as laminating. This makes it a very cost effective option when looking at different finishes. Having a different finish on the cover and the text of a brochure can also be very effective.
Water based coatings are generally considered to be one of the most environmentally-friendly coating options because the formulas are nontoxic in the pressroom. Once applied, the sheet can be recycled in standard systems without emitting harmful by-products. The clean-up process does not require toxic cleaning detergents nor does it necessitate high temperatures (e.g. added energy) for drying.
